Top 5 ways to increase cardio fitness

Cardio can be one of the most boring types of fitness to some people, I just think those people have not tried any fun cardio fitness routines or exercises. Don’t get me wrong I do need an iPod with my favourite tunes if I’m off out for a run but there are other ways to get excited about cardio fitness. Read on.

# 1 – Circuit Training.

One of the hardest and best forms of cardio fitness is circuits. A circuit is a group of exercises that you generally do 30 secs of each before moving onto the next. This varies from circuit to circuit and depends on who is taking the class, but of course you can create your own at home!

A typical circuit to start your new cardio fitness routine, repeat 3 times before resting for a minute:

  • 30 secs – Press ups
  • 30 secs – Sit ups
  • 30 secs – Sprints
  • 30 secs – Bench Dips
  • 30 secs – Crunches
  • 30 secs – Skipping
  • 30 secs – Diamond press ups
  • 30 secs – Plank
  • 30 secs – Burpees
  • 30 secs – Squat Jumps

#2 – Try the footballers workout.

Leg strength is what you need to be a great footballer, try these for starters:

  • Squats
  • Walking Lunges
  • Dumbbell Squats
  • 8-10 sets of 15 second sprints
  • Single Leg Squats

Working the legs really gets your cardio fitness in gear as you are working the larger muscle groups, they can take a lot more weight and resistance than any other part of your body.

#3 – Off road running.

Running is a great way to improve your cardio fitness, but it’s best to do it outdoors. Why? Apart from the fresh air in your lungs, you will also benefit from gaining stronger ankles and calf muscles. This is to do with the uneven ground you will be navigating yourself through when running off road – or also known as trail running.

#4 – Do some household chores.

Having a clean house or car not enough to make to do that bit of spring cleaning? Well doing those extra chores will have you sweating out the calories in no time. Choose from any of your favourite chores from washing the car to hoovering your pad from top to bottom.

#5 – Give those gym classes a try.

One of the best gym classes has already been mentioned above – circuits. Many gym’s now offer several different classes which you can attend usually at an extra cost but some gyms offer classes as part of a package. These classes are great for increasing your cardio fitness and help burn up hundreds of calories. The top burning classes are; Spinning, Circuits, CrossFit, Boxercise; Body Combat and Zumba – these classes are made to get your cardio fitness at it’s best.
